New presentation app of the Important geological localities
Markéta Vajskebrová
The Czech Geological Survey (CGS) has launched a new presentation for the database of Important Geological Localities of the Czech Republic. This database represents a unique, comprehensively structured and long-term register of geological localities. Data are stored in the CGS central data warehouse and interconnected with other data sources.
The new application, like its previous version, enables search in records according to many different attributes and simple map viewing. A new design is adapted to screens of various sizes including mobile phones. It is also easier to edit queries and scroll through records. The app offers some prepared selections called Themes. It is possible to directly display for example recently added sites, protected stratotypes, volcanoes in the České středohoří, scientifically exceptional localities suitable for excursions or 21 locations of a newly released memory game (Pexeso - Find a couple) with a link to the e-shop and more.
The database is the result of a project elaborating on the original idea and the former paper card catalogue founded in the early 1990s by Mgr. Vladimír Lysenko (CGS) and Professor Ivo Chlupáč (Faculty of Science). Records in the database are continuously added and updated. Individual regional geologists of the CGS are responsible for the professional accuracy in their area of competence.
Currently, there are 3299 publicly accessible records and another 310 are in non-public mode. Two-thirds of the records are photographically documented.
The collected data are used for scientific purposes, education, spatial planning, area assessment, nature conservation and, last but not least, they contribute to higher public awareness and popularization of geology and individual sites.
