MultiMiner Project presents its findings in an interactive StoryMap

To summarize the results achieved by the Remote Sensing team of the Czech Geological Survey within the MultiMiner project, an interactive StoryMap titled “Eyes on the Earth: The Future of Responsible Mining” has been created.
The research team, led by Veronika Strnadová and comprising Martin Kýhos, Petra Sedláčková, Jan Jelének, and Barbora Kořínková, focused on developing an innovative monitoring framework for assessing environmental hazards associated with surface mining. The project outcomes address current challenges in the sustainable use of natural resources, where growing demand for raw materials must be balanced with thorough environmental protection.
The research methodology relies on integrating data from several distinct levels:
Ground-based monitoring: The collection of in situ data using spectroradiometers, followed by laboratory analysis of collected samples, provides essential reference data. These data are vital for the accurate calibration and validation of remote sensing data.
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAVs): Hyperspectral sensors mounted on UAVs enable data collection with centimeter-level spatial resolution. UAV-based imagery creates a methodological bridge between point-based ground measurements and satellite data.
Satellite data: Utilizing satellite data from the PlanetScope constellation, MODIS and EMIT sensors, and model outputs from CAMS provides a comprehensive regional overview. These data are used for spatial monitoring and the prediction of dust pollution, surface water quality assessment, and the detection of acid mine drainage runoff.
