The aim of the project is to register the important geological localities in the Czech Republic and to make collected data available through the public aplications. Also the current condition of the sites and their conservation are taken in consideration and in case of threats the increase of their protection is recommended to authorities of nature protection.
The database contains information about localities in protected areas of different categories, as well as about scientifically significant localities or localities with other interests without any preservation. Each record contains general characteristics including location and accessibility, a geological description, data about conservation and conflicts of interest, list of references to relevant publications and a localization on a map. By the end of the year 2023 the database contains more than 3200 localities and more than 60% are accompanied by photographs.
Application presents an overview of the important geological localities in the Czech Republic. It is logically divided in two parts: viewing (view and search for the localities in map), and search (database search according to different criteria: localization, geological characteristics, level of protection etc.). Users can display an expert evaluation, photographs, references in literature for individual localities. Print outputs can be generated.
Map server application creates an overview of the important geological localities in the Czech Republic. The application presents sites in the Czech Republic which demonstrate extremely diverse geological features, occurrences of significant rocks, minerals and fossils. The application enables the user to search according to attributes of the localities, administrative units, map grids etc. Other map layers are also available (geological maps, etc.).
Map application is usable directly in the field thanks to its geolocation using GPS. It briefly and clearly describes geologically interesting sites in the Czech Republic – natural geological outcrops, caves and karst phenomenon or remains of human activities, mainly of mining origin. Description of the geosite includes a photo, note of its protection and other references. Moreover one can choose layer Building and decorative stones with basic information about displayed objects. Topographic and orthophoto maps of the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre serve as background maps.
The database is continuously updated and supplemented, the information is verified by regional geological specialists from CGS. Collected data are used for scientific purposes, education, spatial planning, territory assessment, nature protection and contribute to promotion geology and particular localities in public.
The database is a unique evidence continual updated for a ten of years. It is sophisticated structured and reliable register of geological localities from the whole area of the Czech Republic. Data are saved in the Central Data Store of CGS and through it they are connected with other data sets of the CGS.
In the early nineties Mgr. Vladimír Lysenko (CGS) and RNDr Ivo Chlupáč DrSc. (Charles University of Prague, Faculty of Science) proposed the creation of the register of important geological localities. Together with their colleagues from CGS, Faculty of Science ChU, Academy of Sciences CR, museums and other institutions established in the CGS the basic register originally in the form of card files and between 1997 and 2001 it was converted to the database form. From 2001 this database is used in the Geographical Information System (GIS) of the Czech Geological Survey and it is gradually completed and updated primarily of information acquired by geological mapping in the scale 1: 25000.
