Workshop on numeric modelling of whole-rock geochemical data from magmatic rocks in Cagliari (Sardinia)
Vojtěch Janoušek
From 29 October till 2 November 2022, Università degli Studi di Cagliari (Sardinia) hosted a workshop 'Recalculation, graphical representation and petrogenetic modelling of whole-rock geochemical data from igneous rocks using GCDkit/R'. The young participants of this event, organized by Assoc. Prof. Silvio Ferrero, came not only from Europe (Croatia, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland), but also North Africa (Morocco) and North America (Canada). Both teachers, Vojtěch Janoušek (Czech Geological Survey/Charles University in Prague) and Jean-François Moyen (Université Jean-Monnet, Saint-Etienne, Francie), initially provided comprehensive introduction into the syntax of the R programming language and its freeware library Geochemical Data Toolkit (GCDkit) (Janoušek et al. 2006). The main part was formed by theoretical lectures on reproducible science, graphical presentation of whole-rock geochemical data and petrogenetic modelling of magmatic processes, followed by practical exercises in the R language. One day has been set apart for a field excursion into the Variscan Sàrrabus Pluton (SE Sardinia), led by Gianfranco Secchi, Leonardo Casini (Università di Sassari), Stefano Naitza and Silvio Ferrero (Cagliari). The whole workshop was, in our view, successful; the participants were fast learning and discussing lively both in the classroom, as well as in the field. We trust that the newly acquired skills will be of use in their commencing scientific careers.
