Workshop 'Advanced Training Programme on Granites and Related Rocks' in Nainital (India)

On 5–11 September 2022, the Department of Geology, Centre of Advanced Study, Kumaun University, Nainital (Uttarakhand – India) hosted a one-week workshop “Advanced Training Programme on Granites and Related Rocks” sponsored by the DRT (Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi) through KIRAN (Knowledge Involvement in Research Advancement through Nurturing) scheme. It was dedicated solely to female doctoral students and young scientists (up to 40 years old). During the busy week, 20 participants, selected from 14 universities and geoscience institutions throughout India, attended morning lectures and afternoon practicals. The overseas experts from France, Italy, South Africa, Switzerland, USA and Czech Republic covered various aspects and methodological approaches employed to study granitoid rocks, starting from field work, through interpretation of structural and geophysical data, petrology and fluid/melt inclusions, whole-rock geochemistry, geochronology and isotope geochemistry, to thermodynamic and geochemical modelling of magmatic processes. The next week followed and interesting and thought-provoking excursion to Kumaun Himalaya, where we were given an opportunity to study the field relations, structural and lithological record in the principal nappes building up the Lesser Himalaya. Since the very beginning, we were impressed by the spotless organization and hospitality of our colleagues from the Kumaun University (led by the unbeatable prof. Santosh Kumar), as well as a good knowledge level of the participants. The best was, however, their enthusiasm, diligence and appetite to learn new things. I trust not only that they learned some ideas and techniques they can use in their commencing careers, but also that we had a chance to assist somewhat in removing barriers and gender-related stereotypes, that may still persist in the Indian society.
