Outcomes of the art competition “My Piece of the Planet Earth”

On May 5, 2007, the winners of the first year of the art competition called “My Piece of the Planet Earth”, organized by the Czech Geology Survey Publishers, were announced at the event’s concluding ceremony of the Bookworld Fair Prague 2007. More than one thousand children coming from 81 different Czech schools took an active part in the competition. (All 1,081 art works are accessible on-line, www.geology.cz/soutez, including selected commentaries by the competition’s winners.) On the occasion of this celebration in the hall marked with the logo “Growing when Reading”, Dr Veronika Štědrá informed the parents and their children about some other projects being prepared for the International Year of the Planet Earth 2008. There was also an art workshop held under the leadership of MgA Helena Neubertová and Tereza Juřinová. The most successful children’s works were shown on the fair stand of the CGS, a few pictures even published as cards. Having purchased them, people contributed to the breeding of the iguana the CGS has adopted for one year now. The profit should promote other activities concerning the Earth sciences and their popularization. In view of the fact that the public showed a lot of interest in this event (including asking about the second year of the competition), further exhibitions are being prepared, and apart from the printed set of the cards, the awarded children’s pictures have been published in the CGS’s wall calendar for the International Year of the Planet Earth.
