On December 4–8, 2006, the Conference on Geology of Iraq was organized by the DOLIN Co. Ltd in cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey and under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was held on the occasion of the first English-version publication of the book Geology of Iraq written by many Czech authors and and also published in Czech in 2006. The most important participants came from Iraq, namely the mission of the Iraqi Geological Survey headed by managing director Dr. Khaldoun al Bassam, Iraqi students attending Charles University, and trainees of the Geotest Brno Co. PLC. They gave and/or listened to several lectures on geological structure of Iraq, on its ore and non-ore deposits, its gas and oilfields as well as water resources, emphasizing that the country’s oilfields rank among the largest in the world, or, to be more precise, just behind Saudi Arabia. The program of the conference also included a visit to Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), especially to hot springs, mineral waters and spa facilities, which might once be built in Iraq.
