At the turn of January and February 2026, experts from the Czech Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Faculty of Science, Charles University and SG Geotechnika, conducted a four-week expedition to Ethiopia as part of the project Improving the quality of life by ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water resources in the Sidama region and Gamo-Gofa zones (2023–2026).
The expedition included the collection of geological field data in the Gamo-Gofa zone, hydrogeological research in the Bilate River catchment, and ongoing geological studies.
Additionally, a two-week workshop on groundwater quantification was conducted in collaboration with Arba Minch University and the Ministry of Water and Energy of Ethiopia (MOWE). The workshop combined the theoretical foundations of hydrogeology with modern analytical tools, including GIS and machine learning methods.
The expedition strengthened collaboration with local institutions and contributed to the sustainable management of groundwater resources in the region.
