Cooperation project with Costa Rica and Cuba successfully completed
Vladimír Žáček
On October 23, 2025, a closing seminar was held in San José, Costa Rica, with the participation of the professional community and representatives of the diplomatic corps, at which the results of the annual project of tripartite cooperation between the Czech Geological Survey, the Dirección de Geología y Minas (DMG Costa Rica) and the Instituto Geológico y Paleontológico (IGP, Cuba) were presented.
The purpose of the project, led by Ms. A. S. Huapaya from the DGM, was to create a methodology for assessing the vulnerability of the coast with regard to rising sea levels. The project was financed by the ADELANTE 2 program, a tripartite cooperation between the European Union - Latin America and the Caribbean countries.
The approximately 100 km long section of the Costa Rican Central Pacific coast was selected as a model, where a 1:25,000 geological map was compiled as one of the bases for the risk assessment. Vladimír Žáček and Tomáš Hroch participated together with Costa Rican geologists in the field geological mapping, which took place in March 2025, and M. Bubík also participated in the subsequent petrographic evaluation. The original author's original was compiled in the Czech Geological Survey (V. Žáček, T. Hroch) and the geological map was digitized (L. Smyčková).
The risk assessment was then carried out with the participation of specialists from Costa Rica and Cuba. The main output of the project is a methodological manual (Huapaya et al. 2025), which was published in December 2025 by the Costa Rican Party, and which will be distributed to local governments in endangered areas.
