Research Interests
A large part of my research is focused at lithium isotope systematics in a variety of terrestrial and non-terrestrial samples. In particular, I use Li elemental/isotope analyses of mantle xenoliths from various places (e.g., Bohemian Massif, Australia, USA, Siberia) to investigate the status of the mantle and its reflection of ephemeral to massive modification through metasomatic effects, where Li is particularly instrumental due to large relative mass difference and response to hydrous/fluid activity. These efforts are in concert with Li elemental/isotope analyses of a wider range of mantle-derived melts from intra-continental, ocean island and other settings (alkaline basalts, kimberlites, lamproites, Iceland, Canary Islands). Further, a number of subduction settings are being approached (Cascadia, Nicaragua, Antarctica, Tian Shan) in order to tie the ultimate fate of subducted materials including their recycled signatures. Besides, chemically evolved lithologies such as granitic rocks and their ultimate derivate products (pegmatites) are also investigated from a number of locations (central Europe, USA, Australia, Africa) with the aim to establish Li as a viable tool to reconstruct the history of Earth's continental crust across the time. Apart from crystalline Earth, several recent applications of Li involve characterization of past seawater evolution, groundwater recharge, biogeochemical signatures and nuclear forensics.
Beyond Earth, Li is an important element in cosmochemistry and one of the few elements (nuclei) synthesized during the Big Bang. Its elemental/isotope systematics in various extra-terrestrial materials may bear on early Solar System processes, thermal and aqueous history of chondrite parent bodies, and magma ocean processes in larger terrestrial and asteroidal bodies, such as Moon, Mars and Vesta. Through careful analyses, Li may help in unravelling crystallization history of solidifying reservoirs with first-order implications for formation of primordial, secondary and tertiary planetary crusts and their relevance in planetary cycles.
Cenozoic alkaline volcanism represent an important phase in the evolution of the Bohemian Massif. Along with frequent extrusive basaltic lithologies (basalts, basanites, tephrites), numerous occurrences of their chemically more evolved derivative melts exist. However, temporal–spatial and genetic relation of phonolites and trachytes to their parent magmas are not yet properly disentangled. Differences in geochemical properties of mafic and differentiated volcanic rocks may be due to the compositional heterogeneity of the lithospheric upper mantle beneath the Bohemian Massif which was amalgamated from several independent lithospheric blocks during the Variscan orogeny. Primitive and derived differentiated melts may thus impart unique chemical and isotope fingerprints derived from particular lithospheric blocks. Collision between the Saxothuringian and Teplá–Barrandien Units may have further added to heterogeneous nature of the mantle beneath the Bohemian Massif. We employ a range of geochemical tools (radiogenic isotopes – Sr, Nd, Pb, Os, Hf; stable isotopes – Li, O; noble gases – He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe; K–Ar and Ar–Ar dating) to assess the physical and chemical status of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle through analyses of mantle xenoliths, deconvolve interactions of rising magmas with the overlying crust, monitor distinctive fractionation trends along the Ohře/Eger Rift, the major extensional suture in the Bohemian Massif, and provide further constraints on formation of phonolites, often carrying extreme Rb/Sr ratios, which lend them peculiar Sr isotope compositions despite their young magmatic ages. These data are collectively used to provide self-consistent models of formation and evolution of intra-continental alkaline volcanic provinces.
Tektites are unusual materials associated with hyper-velocity impacts of celestial bodies into Earth's surface materials. At present, four areas with tektites (strewn fields) are defined and three of these are known to be assigned to a particular impact structure (Ries–Steinheim; Bosumtwi; Chesapeake Bay). Moldavites are central European tektites genetically related to the Ries–Steinheim crater in Germany and they are found in Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and Poland. While it is well-established that loose sedimentary cover provided most of the material forming moldavites, ongoing research has indicated that plant biomass could have also supplied a subordinate proportion of source matter. Moreover, formation of moldavites (and tektites in general) has been accompanied by stark chemical fractionation of many elements considering extreme physico–chemical conditions occurring during tektite formation. We explore various scenarios of formation of tektites and other impact-related glasses (e.g., Zhamanshin impact structure, Kazakhstan) during incipient melting at target sites, their interactions with ambient atmosphere, and tracing their ultimate impactor signatures (if preserved at all). In order to tie/decline some of the existing theories of tektite history, we focus on the stable isotope systematics (Li, Ca, Mg, Si, Cu, Zn) of chemically diverse moldavites and sedimentary materials from the vicinity of the Ries crater, paralleled by 54Cr, Re–Os and platinum group element systematics in order to reveal possible traces of extraterrestrial signature. Furthermore, Sr–Nd–Pb data may provide diagnostic tests for sedimentary sources of moldavites where other isotopes systems may be less conclusive. Besides, hydrogen isotope systematics in large gas bubbles entrapped in moldavites are investigated to better anchor reducing conditions during tektite formation, and magnetic properties of moldavites are investigated to elucidate how iron is emplaced into their glass structure.
Non-traditional stable isotope systems (effectively all stable isotope systems other than H, C, O, N and S) became a key modern tool for addressing a range of geological processes which were previously only assessed using radiogenic isotope systems (Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf, Os), often with uncertain results. Such a significant improvement of our knowledge was enabled following an advent of and further developments in MC-ICPMS instrumentation. Over two decades of investigations of novel stable isotope systems (Li, B, Mg, Si, Ca, V, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mo, Tl, U etc.) returned a wealth of information about interactions between various reservoirs (mantle, crust, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere), tempos of reactions and other geological phenomena as well as large-scale planetary processes. Seafloor alteration and subduction factory were among the first systematically investigated global geological phenomena where novel stable isotope systems were applied to unravel the extent and rates of ocean floor alteration, slab–wedge mass transfer, including dehydration and migration of fluids/melts, mineral-scale kinetic effects, but also evolution of ocean water, continental weathering etc. In this respect, novel stable isotope systems are a perfectly suited tool to address a plethora of processes occurring in collisional zones where ocean basins existed and participated in generating a range of chemical compositions of metamorphic complexes.
Novel stable isotope systems are also utilized for pivotal and/or detailed characterization of reservoirs in Moon and Mars. In particular, Ca and Mg isotope systematics have been employed to determine stable isotope composition of silicate Mars and assess possible low-temperature processes which could influence their systematics on Mars. Also, vanadium is used to compare inner Solar System bodies and their early history with respect to stable isotope composition of V. Studies of Fe isotope systematics in lunar rocks include all key lithologies available through Apollo sample collections with a particular focus to maria basalts and highland rocks, including anorthositic crust.
Carbonatites are mantle-derived silicate magmatic rocks with substantial proportion of carbonate minerals. Three main theories of carbonatite genesis have been proposed and are not entirely mutually exclusive. Carbonatites have also been one of major sources of critical metals, so relevant for modern civilization. We investigate several occurrences of carbonatites with associated silicate (alkaline) rocks in India, Africa and USA. We specifically target at tracing the magmatic and post-emplacement history of these localities using combined stable (C, O, Ca) and radiogenic (Sr, Nd, Pb) isotope systematics, underscored by careful petrography and in-situ U–Pb dating of zircon, apatite and calcite by means of LA-ICPMS. Also, no information is available for highly siderophile elements and Os isotopes that are rendered a powerful tool in deciphering the extent of melting, crustal contamination and presence of sulfide phases, with possible implications to large-scale contamination of global mantle with carbonatitic liquids.
We develop analytical procedures and mass spectrometry routines for a range of elements and various matrices which can further boost our knowledge of Earth system science. These comprise refinements of existing ion-exchange methods for isolation of Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, Nd and Pb as well as developments of routine U–Th–Pb dating in-situ using laser ablation in tandem with ICPMS. We particularly focus on zircon studies from magmatic samples and detrital populations but progress is made for other phases, such as monazite, apatite and carbonate. Besides, coupling of laser ablation to MC-ICPMS is in process for future applications in in-situ analyses of Hf and Sr isotope compositions in size-restricted samples (zircons, carbonates, phosphates) where spatial information can provide much new information.
